When installing applications or updates on your Mac, can you delete the .dmg files?
I've installed a few freeware applications such as MSN Messenger, Lab Tick, Flip4Mac, aMSN etc.. and also updates for various applications.
Once i've an application installed or updated (and working ok) can I delete the .dmg file?
I've tried to delete the .dmg file for MSN Messenger in the past only to find that it wouldn't work and I'd have to install it again, but i've deleted .dmg files for other applications (as it told me that I could delete if I wanted to after successful installation)
So what can and cannot I do with .dmg files?

I think I had some applications installed incorrectly - when I open MSN, a white drive opend also on the desktop, and the same happened with Firefox, the white drive with a Firefox logo would appear on the desktop anytime I opened these applications.
I think this was because I didn't install some things properly, I think I may have dragged the icons to the task bar along the bottom before adding them to my applications folder. I've uninstalled some applications and reinstalled them correctly and now everything is working fine. I can also delete .dmg files now, because in the past - seeing the applications weren't installed correctly, deleting the .dmg file caused the application to partially uninstall as it was running the incorrectly installed application.

Yes you can delete the.iso files. That will not affect the existing system anyway. But you may need it any later time for re-installation or repair.Unless there is acute crisis of disk space it is recommended to preserve the.iso file of the existing distro you are using.     Also delete your cookies and other web data, as it can build up and you don't really need that stuff.
    Try going to to Go in the finder menu, Go to Folder, Type in ~/Library/ click Go and look around and see what you don't need and highlight and delete the junk.

    After a successful conversion from PDF to Word, you need to download the converted file locally on your computer.
    You can then choose 'Enable Editing' button and then delete images/text or make other changes.

    Melinda. it looks like you created a new user account and then deleted the old user account..if everything is ok with the user account you are using..you can delete the old account (drag it to the Trash) ...which is located at..
    HD/Users/Deleted (Folder)

    You can certainly create a folder into which you place all .dmg files.
    Regarding the download issue (e.g. firefox), where did you intall the downloaded software. If you didn't actually install it but merely downloaded it, by double clicking on it you are mounting a drive. I suspect you may have done that. So, once you have the drive icon, open it and see if the application is in that drive. If so, install it where you want. I don't know if firefox is a .app package or uses an intaller script. If it is a .app package, just drag it to you applications folder. Then, delete the original download and drag the mounted drive icon to the trash. If it isn't a .app package, it will usually have an installer icon. Double click that and follow the instructions. Then proceed as above to delete the download and drive icon.

  • My application requires that a collection of files be deleted. I currently loop through an array of File objects to be deleted, and invoke the delete() method on each object, i.e.

    Problem: If one or more of the files has a 'lock' on it, such as in Windows when some other process may be accessing the file, then those files can not be deleted, and returnval = false. How could I know before deleting ~any~ files in the collection, if some of the files can not be deleted? I would prefer not to actually delete any of the files in the collection, if one or more files can not be deleted because of a lock or any other reason. I have tried using SecurityManager to perform this a priori check on the deletability of a file, but no luck! Please advise.

    It tries to delete a temp file that doesn't exist, so
    it doesn't delete anything in fact.Yes, the statement tempFile.delete() is not actually needed in the function isFileInUse. Other than that, the function isFileInUse does serve its purpose -- it determines true or false if there is a lock on a file. It does so by trying to rename the source file. If it can rename the source file, then we know there is no external lock on that file, and the function renames it back to what it was and returns false. This is a little tricky, but it works great. However, you would think there is a better way.
    It was suggested also to try using the java.nio.filechannels.FileChannel class, which may be the proper way to go, but I haven't tried it yet. In particular, the method FileChannel.tryLock() returns 'null if the lock could not be acquired because another program holds an overlapping lock.'

  • There are two Macbooks backing up a Time Capsule on our wireless network. My mother noticed an error message on her laptop saying there's not enough space for Time Machine to perform a back up. I took a look at the Time Capsule, and sure enough, there's only 8 gigs left, even though in theory there should be plenty of space. (By my estimation maybe 100 gigs or so.)
    I scanned my Time Capsule with GrandPerspective and noticed that my laptop has two sparsebundle files on the Time Capsule. One hasn't been updated since March. The only thing I can think of is that In the Spring I changed settings in Time Machine to back up a folder I hadn't backed up before. The other sparsebundle file is current to today.
    Can I somehow get rid of the older one without causing too much trouble?

    If you don't plan to access any of the data on the older 'sparsebundle' file, I'd delete it. That will probably take a few minutes.

  • I'm new to using Time Machine - I'm making my first backup right now - and I have a few concerns.
    So let's say my precious photos are taking up most of my Mac's hard drive space. I back them up with Time Machine on an external hard drive. After that, I want to delete my photos from my Mac because I want more space and my photos are now stored in the external hard drive. I have a few questions about that.
    First, does Time Machine's backup system follow the same concept as having extra storage (so would this be a reasonable decision to make)?
    Second, if it does, then could I access/open these photos from Time Machine's backup anytime I want?
    Third, would I need to use the restore backup function of Time Machine every time I want to open my photos are there alternative ways of accessing my photos, like through opening directory paths to the photos?
    Lastly, when the external hard drive becomes full and Time Machine wants to delete my oldest backup files, what can I do to ensure that these photos will never get deleted unless I manually do it? Like, is there a way to lock and secure these files? Or, is it like if these photos are the only copies saved in the backup, I can rest assure that Time Machine will never delete them?

    1: TimeMachine saves states of changes and thus requires more room on the TM drive than the boot drive it's backing up.

  • I have been having issues with my start up disk being full.
    To the point where I could not copy to my clipboard as I had ZERO space left, programmes were shutting down etc.
    I couldn't even delete the few pics I had as I couldn't open my Kodak software.
    I have uploaded the photos now and deleted them, I have copied all the files I can to sticks, there is basically nothing I have added on the computer, yet I still have only under 700 MB of space on my HD.
    I have downloaded and run Omni Disk..it is telling me I have 130GB of 'private/var' files.
    I know I cannot just go around deleting things, so need to know what I can and cant delete if possible?
    I really need to sort this problem out!
    I also need to know how to fix this problem from happening again - is this a log problem or what exactly?

    just to make sure that there is not a dum mistake: did you empty the trash?.
    Other:
    Disk space consumers are typically large photo libraries, music and video files.
    back them up, then delete them, and don't forget to empty the trash.
    To find large directories :
    open Terminal (under applications/utilities), then type 'du -d 1 -h' (without quotation marks). this gives a list. for example, it says ' 25G ./Pictures', it means that the Picture directory has 25 GB. you can then refine and ask for deeper levels, by typing 'du -d 2 -h' or 'du -d 3 -h'.
    Try to find out in this way. if this doesn't give you the correct hint, please, report back, there might be more complex problems.

    If you can attach an external drive to the MacBook Air, you could move your image library to the external drive, then configure Time Machine to back up both your MacBook Air and the external drive.
    This way, you would have your 'originals' 'on one drive and 'backups' on another drive. That is what backups are all about. If you move your images to the Time Capsule, they will be deleted sooner or later when Time Machine is looking for more backup space. In the meantime, even if you have the images on the Time Capsule..you will have no backups in the event of a problem with the Time Capsule or drive you are using for Time Machine.

  • I'm running out of space on Macintosh HD so I started moving things to my other computer (desktop so more storage). There should only be about 165 GB used out of 750 GB capacity however there is 459 GB used. So, I thought, where's all the space gone? Through using Finder's 'Get Info' feature I tracked the 459 GB to Macintosh HD/Users/jacobhouse but in jacobhouse (my account's folder) I've stripped everything to a bare minimum. Amounts of storage used is as follows:
    jacobhouse: 409.6 GB (other 50ish thats being used is applications)
    Desktop: 142 KB
    Documents: 500.1 MB
    Downloads: 1.55 GB
    Movies: 14.96 GB
    Music: 19.02 GB
    Pictures: 75.67 GB
    Public: 44.4 MB
    This adds up to approximately 111 GB if I'm correct in converting KB/MB to GB. Still I haven't managed to find the culprit until I tried showing hidden folders. When I told Finder to show all hidden folders and I sorted them by size, I found one named Library which was 409.6 GB.
    As you can see by the Where in the screenshot above, this Library folder is not the one directly in Macintosh HD but rather it is in a User folder. My question now is which of the files in this Library folder am I able to delete to free up space? (contents of Library are below)

I just bought a 12 inch powerbook. when i click the 'Macintosh HD' icon on the desktop, it opens up a window w/ a bunch of icons(i count 27 so far) and i'm pretty sure i don't need about half of them. does anyone know which ones would be okay to trash?

    Glad it worked. The only files you can trash are the documents in 'User Guide and info', even though you'd only gain a few MB. There might be a folder Applications/Installers/, which contains installation files for additional, trial software like FileMaker Pro. Feel free to delete those one as well.
    Unless you know what you're doing, never ever touch the hidden files 'cores, dev, etc, mach, mach.sym, mach_kernel, ..'. It would be like taking the engine out of your car.
    You'll be able to reclaim about 500MB by removing unnecessary localization files. By default, Mac OS X comes with 20+ different languages installed. It's cool to be able to switch everything to Korean within 5 seconds. If, however, you don't have any Asian friends, you might want to use Delocalizer .

Different applications are going to show you slightly different Finder windows. Each application’s designers like to add their own artwork. Glitter aside, most applications are trying to tell you the same thing. See the arrow pointing from the DeskLickr icon to the “Applications’ shortcut? It’s telling you to drag and drop the icon into that folder. Once you’ve done so, the app will be installed.

If a program doesn’t provide a shortcut to the Applications folder, you’ll need to pop open a new Finder window. Press CMD+N to open a new window, then drag the program over to “Applications” in the left-hand side of the window.

Once the new program is installed it’s time to do some house cleaning. You no longer need the disk image you downloaded, so follow these steps:

  1. Close any Finder windows that have been left open.
  2. Eject the disk image (not the .DMG file). Click on its desktop icon, then press CMD+E.
